June Homes
A New Take on Housing
The biggest challenge with June is also its biggest strength: flexibility. Typically, housing websites don’t have options. If you like an apartment, that’s it, the rest of the terms are the property owners’ to decide. In June, the renter is in control to configure their home as though they are buying a Tesla. They can choose the exact dates they want it, down to which bedroom, and which additional services they want.
Because June is so unique, the product explains and educates the renter at every step of the rental process. The product is both interactive searchable inventory of homes, alongside a guide to renting for the first time. This combination made students and travel nurses feel comfortable to choose June over the traditional housing competitors.
Atomic-Design for a Modern Renter
Everything in June is a stand-alone component. We considered every detail when creating June’s Design System. Rather than choosing just an initial color pallet, we developed a font-weight like system for every brand color. This enabled the brand to feel fresh but consistent on each page or screen. We scrutinized every detail as it came to type, optimizing our brand fonts for every screen from Desktop down to Mobile.
In addition, we created components in Figma such as the button that handled size classes, use-cases, all the way to every possible user-state from hover to disabled and everything in between. This enabled us to work fast as a team and create consistent web designs across a global team of designers.
A Bottom-Up Approach
The Buddhist have a phrase - “to polish a tile until it becomes a mirror.” This approach requires you to consider every block, no matter how small it seems. June’s product design takes this approach as the components from the design system bubble up into a full product.
June’s product design optimizes around flexibility. The renter can choose an entire apartment or a room within that apartment. They can choose to live there for 31 days or 56 days. This flexibility required us to create a product that always adapts to what the renter wants.
